History was made in the Village of Marathon on Friday, March 1, 2024, when Marathon Jr./Sr. High School’s entire senior class was accepted to SUNY Broome. Marathon Jr./Sr. High School is SUNY Broome’s newest College Express partner. They also have the distinction of being the first and only regional high school to make their College Express Day a complete surprise for their students.
Over 50 Marathon seniors were ushered into the school’s auditorium to receive their surprise invitation to continue their academic journeys at SUNY Broome. While students participating in College Express Partnerships are not obligated to attend SUNY Broome, they are encouraged to keep their Community’s College as an open option.
Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Penny Kelly, addressed the senior class and shared her personal experiences as a SUNY Broome student.
“I’ve found that throughout my time as a student and throughout my career in higher education, that a community college is the answer to everything. Whether you just take a class over the summer, complete micro-credential, or spend a year or two with us earning a degree to transfer or enter the workforce, there is something to support everyone’s goals. This invitation does not end today. The door to SUNY Broome will always be open for you,” shared Dr. Kelly.
Additional speakers throughout the College Express program included:
- Andy Buchsbaum: Marathon Central School District
- Patti Trabucco: Director of Instruction, Career Pathways, & Enrichment – Marathon Central School District
- Owen Conklin: Director of Admissions
- Allison Chantry: Student Success Coach
- Janie Spears: Sr. Staff Assistant (Admissions)
- Brendan Doherty: Student Athlete Instruction Coach/Men’s Basketball Coach
In addition to the instant acceptance event, Marathon’s customized College Express Partnership includes a campus visit in April 2024, financial literacy and college pro-tips seminars, and an academic advising and course registration session.
Congratulations to each Marathon senior!
