Professional Development at SUNY Broome

Our students have busy lives, sometimes making it difficult for them to make it to class – childcare needs, variable work schedules, illness – you name it, they have to adjust how they participate in their education.

But what if there was a way for them to have flexibility when they needed it? An opportunity to watch a class session after they get out of work or when their children go to bed – would you want them to have that opportunity?

Enter Hyflex – a way for students to meet family, work, and educational responsibilities on their own timeline. Hyflex gives students a choice of coming to a face-to-face class session, engaging remotely via Zoom, or completing a course asynchronously. Choices that might just keep a student here to complete a degree or have what they need to transfer.

If giving your students a choice sounds interesting, you should know that SUNY Broome seeks to expand its portfolio of Hyflex courses offered for the Spring ’23 semester and is looking for interested faculty.

Training sessions will begin in late October and are designed to prepare you for offering your course across multiple modalities simultaneously.

Benefits of training include:

  • Support and guidance from instructional design experts throughout course development
  • Access to state of the art teaching environment and technology (Hyflex Sandbox BB016)
  • Create equitable learning environments for all students
  • Collaboration, community building, and cohort support from colleagues and peers
  • We also have the benefit of three cohorts of Hyflexers, whose real time feedback has been used to refine and streamline the training program.

Note: All faculty offering a Hyflex course must participate in training and development support with an Instructional Designer, have a fully online asynchronous course already developed for the course they wish to Hyflex, and obtain required Dean/Department Chair approvals and support in order to participate in training and offer the course.

If Hyflex sounds like something you are interested in doing, please visit SUNY Broome Hyflex Training Request form to indicate your interest by 5:00 pm on 10/21/22!
