SUNY Broome Community College welcomed more than 60 high school students to campus this summer for the Guthrie/Broome Sports Medicine Career Camp, an immersive day-long experience designed to introduce participants to the growing field of sports medicine and related healthcare careers.
Held in the Decker Health Sciences Center, the camp brought together students, healthcare professionals, educators, and support staff for a full day of interactive learning, hands-on activities, and career exploration. The event was coordinated through a partnership among Guthrie, SUNY Broome’s Workforce Development Department, and the College’s Health Sciences Division.
This year’s camp saw remarkable growth, nearly double the attendance from the previous year.
“Good morning, I wanted to reach out and thank you all for your hard work for the Guthrie/Broome Sports Medicine Career Camp this year,” said Zach N. Spencer of Guthrie Sports Medicine, who served as camp director. “This year we had 64 total students attend. That is almost double to what we had last year, and that would not have been possible without the help of all of the staff. I do appreciate the time and dedication you have committed to helping this program grow.”
Throughout the day, students rotated through a variety of educational sessions led by professionals from Guthrie and SUNY Broome. The program featured presentations and hands-on learning experiences that provided participants with a firsthand look at careers in sports medicine, athletic training, rehabilitation, and other healthcare specialties.
In addition to exploring academic and career pathways, students had the opportunity to interact directly with healthcare professionals and college faculty, gaining valuable insight into the skills, education, and experiences needed to succeed in the field.
Participants also enjoyed lunch on campus, allowing them to experience the college environment while connecting with peers who share similar interests in health sciences and sports medicine.
The success of the event was made possible through the efforts of numerous faculty, staff, and community partners. Workforce & Community Partnerships staff and SUNY Broome Student Success Coaches played an important role in supporting participants throughout the day and ensuring the event ran smoothly.
The Guthrie/Broome Sports Medicine Career Camp continues to serve as an important pipeline program, exposing students to rewarding healthcare careers while strengthening connections between secondary education, higher education, and industry partners.
With attendance growing significantly this year, organizers are optimistic about the camp’s future impact and look forward to expanding opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in sports medicine and healthcare.
