Fall 2025 – New Grants Awarded to SUNY Broome Total More Than $2.2 Million

SUNY Workforce Development Corporate Training Program – Five (5) Grant Awards

Purpose: This program provides funding to SUNY community colleges to operate workforce development/job training programs that address training needs for employers in local communities. Each award is comprised of SUNY grant funds and a required employer cost share amount.

Broome County Department of Social Services (DSS) Training Award: $83,500
Grantor: Federal funds via NYS OCFS funds via Broome County DSS

Funds support Broome County DSS employees pursuing a degree at SUNY Broome, as well as DSS employees pursuing noncredit career development training through Continuing Education.

Entrepreneurial Assistance Center (EAC) Program Award: $173,000 (Year 2 of a 3-year grant)
Grantor: Empire State Development via Binghamton Local Development Center Subaward

Funds are used to maintain an EAC, which provides community-based management and technical assistance to clients seeking to establish and grow their own business within the operating region of the Binghamton Local Development Corporation.

EMBRACE-EAR-Seed: Refining paleotemperature interpretations: High resolution study of the seasonality of fluid inclusion development in halite crystal growth

Funds support relevant, real-world undergraduate research to enhance the existing undergraduate research program within Broome Community College’s Environmental Science program (2-year Community College) and strengthen the collaboration with Binghamton University (R1 Institution) as part of the NSF’s EMpowering BRoader Academic Capacity and Education (EMBRACE) initiative.

Opioid Settlement Fund Addiction Professionals Internships & Scholarships (Additional Funds) Award: $168,700
Grantor: NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports
Project Leads: Dr. Courtney O’Hagen and Kristin Oliver
These additional funds allow for continued issuance of scholarships over a two-year period for students to complete an Associate degree in combination with the 350-hour Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) educational certificate program, and to support students during corresponding internships to the scholarship program.

FY 2026 Federal Perkins V Career & Technical Education (CTE) Assistance Award: $473,875

Funds support CTE equipment, technologies, instructional supplies, and professional development costs in accordance with the identified needs and strategies set forth in the college’s Perkins Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment.

2025 – 2026 Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Award: $217,294
Grantor: SUNY Office of Opportunity Programs

Funds support services to assist the needs of college’s participating EOP students through financial aid, academic counseling, tutoring, and other support services.

2025-2026 Child Care & Development Block Grant Program Award: $64,500
Grantor: Federal CCDBG Fund via NYS Office of Children & Family Services via SUNY Research Foundation
Project Lead: Dr. Carol Ross-Scott
Funds support child care tuition subsidies and quality expenses to benefit the children of SUNY Broome student-parents enrolled at The B.C. Center.

2024-2025 Child Care Appropriation Award: $76,000
Grantor: New York State via SUNY
Project Lead: Dr. Carol Ross-Scott
Funds support child care staff salaries at the B.C Center. By accepting these funds, the campus child care center commits to giving priority enrollment to student parent.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Higher Education Harm Reduction Pilot Award: $6,500
Grantor: NYS Office of Mental Health & NYS Conference of Local Mental Hygiene Directors

Funds support MHFA and harm-reduction training on campus through June 30, 2026. Allowable expenses include incentive items, refreshments for MHFA or harm-reduction training sessions, marketing and promotional materials, and outreach and engagement strategies.

2025-2026 Library Collection Aid Award: $8,621

Funds support the purchase of library resources in several subject areas. Collections are made available to students, faculty and NYS residents via resource sharing.

SUNY Future of Work Centers Award: $661,558
Grantor: NYS Job Linkage Program via SUNY

Funds support a three-year initiative to expand workforce training opportunities that align with labor market demands in the Construction Trades and advance economic mobility for under-served populations. The project focuses on developing and delivering a Construction Trades Bootcamp and Pre-Apprenticeship Program.
