Environmental Science Students Present Undergraduate Research

This spring, Professors Jason Smith and Kennie Leet accompanied several students from the Environmental Science program at SUNY Broome as they presented their undergraduate research at regional conferences.

These projects emerge from the programs Senior Seminar course and top projects were accepted for poster presentations. Emily Dimock and Kathryn White presented their work, “Effects of 12/22/2022 Snow Event on Dorman Creek Electrical Conductivity and Stage” at the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) held at the University of Buffalo and at the Northeast Geological Society of America (Northeast GSA) Meeting in Manchester, NH. Also presenting at Northeast GSA were Megan Carden and Taylor Persky who presented on, “Conditions for Modern Siliceous Gel Formation: Alvord Hot Springs, Oregon” and Bennett Howell who presented on, “Revisiting Alkali Lake, Oregon Magadiite: A Reanalysis of Lake Shore Sediments”. Additionally, Summer Lambrecht and Natalie Gagnon presented their work on, “The Relationship between Diatoms and The Changing Borax Lake Habitat” at SURC.

Students had a wonderful time speaking with peers and researchers about their work. Colleagues from four-year institutions were impressed with the students work! As we were leaving SURC in Buffalo, we discovered several students had never been to Niagara Falls so had to make a quick stop at Niagara Falls before returning to Binghamton! It was a beautiful way to end the day and reward the students for all of their hard work throughout the program.

These students will be graduating this spring and transferring to schools such as SUNY ESF, Binghamton University and Stony Brook.
