Connie Goldman’s The Gifts of Caregiving: Stories of Hardship, Hope, and Healing

SUNY Broome Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Francis Battisti contributed a story to Connie Goldman’s The Gifts of Caregiving: Stories of Hardship, Hope, and Healing.

The 2018 book, published by the Society of Certified Senior Advisors, shares the personal stories of those who have accepted the responsibilities of being a primary caregiver. In their stories, these caregivers discuss the changes, challenges and sacrifices they face, but also the gifts of inspiration, insight and healing that a commitment to caregiving brings.

Dr. Battisti cared for his father, an Italian immigrant, during his final years of life. During his time as a caregiver, he learned the importance of simply being with and relating to his father, not focusing on tasks that needed completion.

“My relationship with my dad in those years of his illness fed my own midlife growing experience,” Dr. Battisti told Goldman.
