Counseling Services would like to remind the campus community that we are open for business as usual. We understand that this is a very stressful time for students, faculty and staff alike. Below, please find some tips to help you remain calm and keep things in perspective.

  • Be prepared and informed. Have a few extra supplies on hand in case there is a need.
  • Limit news overexposure- this includes social media “news”. Overexposure may lead to overreacting and increased anxiety. Rely on trusted news outlets.
  • Eat healthy, stay hydrated and well rested. Get exercise and get outside. This not only helps protect you from the virus, but also helps manage stress levels that may be rising as a result of the current state of affairs in our community, nation and world. This is so important. This not only helps to keep your immune system healthy, but also helps to keep your mind healthy.
  • wash your hands often (wash for a min. of 20 seconds) and use an alcohol- based hand sanitizer when washing is not an option. Note: hand sanitizer is not a substitute for washing, but can help in the spread of germs.
  • clean your living space and surrounding environment (office, car, etc) on a regular basis and open windows when you can. Wash or wipe items down that have been on and in common, public spaces- example coats, bags, etc.
  • and most importantly- to help you reduce the stress and anxiety that is rising- seek enjoyment! Do things that you enjoy and have fun with. Don’t forget to have fun.

Do not get obsessed with focusing only on news around the virus.
The covid-19 virus is a reality. It is in the news and on our minds. We do not have control over it, but we do have control over how we respond emotionally to it.

If you are struggling with feeling stressed and overwhelmed, Counseling Services is available for Students and for consultation with faculty and/or staff. We are in this together.
