Criminal Justice student, Nicholas Bartholomew was presented with the New York State Sheriff's Institute Scholarship AwardOn Tuesday, February 7, 2023, Criminal Justice student, Nicholas Bartholomew was presented with the New York State Sheriff’s Institute Scholarship Award. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar, Undersheriff Sammy Davis, and members of the SUNY Broome Criminal Justice and Emergency Services (CJES) Department presented Nicholas Bartholomew with the award during a ceremony at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office. Each year, one outstanding student is selected to receive the scholarship to go toward education expenses.

Nick has been a full time Criminal Justice major at SUNY Broome since Fall 2021. During his first academic year, Nicholas’ hard work placed him on the Dean’s List for Fall 2021 and on the President’s List for Spring 2022 and Fall 2022, with an overall GPA of 3.8.

Nicholas intends to pursue law enforcement after graduating from SUNY Broome, specifically as a police officer or deputy with the Sheriff’s Office. Most notably, Nick works full time for the Town of Vestal Water Department and is a full-time student, with a heavy course load. Nick works hard at school, and describes himself as “very ambitious” with “great self-discipline” to complete his course work in a timely manner, while producing “high quality work.” Nick is determined to give everything his “best shot” because he “wants to do well.” He knows that the harder he works now, the better off he will be in the future.

As a primarily online student and due to his work schedule, Leigh Martindale, Associate Professor in the CJES Department, met Nick face to face for the first time during the scholarship ceremony. Martindale notes, “To have made such a positive impression as an online student is no easy feat, yet Nick has been consistent and is always willing to go above and beyond in his work. I can see through the work he submits and how he presents himself in online discussions and assignments that he is not only a team player, smart, and respectful, but a good human; to me, this speaks volumes.”

The SUNY Broome CJES Department would like to thank the New York State Sheriff’s Institute for offering these scholarship opportunities to students and their continued support, as well as the Broome County Sheriff’s Office for their collaboration and efforts within our community and SUNY Broome.
