Completing Gateway English Increases Student Graduation Rates
At SUNY Broome, students who completed Gateway English in their first year have consistently graduated at higher rates than those who did not. This is true across every cohort at the College from Fall 2018 to Fall 2023. Two-year graduation rates for SUNY Broome students who completed a Gateway English in their first year have ranged from 16.3-21.6% over this time period.
In contrast, two-year graduation rates for students who did NOT take a Gateway English in their first year have been lower, as compared to their counterparts. Over this same time period, graduation rates for these students have been between 7.6-14%. Completers in two of these years graduated at DOUBLE the rates as students who did not complete Gateway English in their first year.
Completion of a Gateway English course is one of the Key Performance Indicators for SUNY Broome, as part of its Academic Momentum Plan. As can be seen from the data this is a crucial course for students to complete within their first academic year, and consistently impacts two-year graduation rates.
