Cadence of Success: 2025-26 Music Program Review Data packet

All academic programs at SUNY Broome undergo a program review every five years. The Music A.S. program recently completed their program review and had a successful external reviewer visit. During the program review process, programs provide data to help them assess and make programmatic decisions. Data provided includes key metrics such as enrollment, credit hours, graduation and transfer rates, and student engagement in performance. This data helps identify trends and support program improvements. Below is a summary of those metrics for Music A.S.

Enrollment Trends

While enrollment has been lowered in recent years, it has held fairly steady for the last three years. Part of this decline may reflect the introduction of the Recording and Production degree program. When enrollment for both degree programs is combined, overall enrollment has slightly increased over the last five years.

Retention Rates

New First-Time Full-Time Students

The charts below show retention for New First-Time Full-Time Music AS students as compared to the overall College. Fall-to-Spring retention was highest in F23–Sp24 at 100% Fall-to-Fall retention also peaked in F22–F23 at 87.5% before declining to 28.6% in F24–F25.

Overall Student Retention Trends

The charts show overall retention for Music AS students compared to the College. Fall-to-Spring retention peaked in F24–S25 at 80.0% and was lowest in F20–S21 at about 63.4%, indicating stronger short-term (semester-to-semester) persistence than year-to-year retention. Fall-to-Fall retention was highest in F21–F22 at about 41.5% and lowest in F20–F21 at about 29.3%.

DFW Rates

DFW rates represent the percentage of grades students have earned as D, F, or W out of all grades awarded in a course or program.

The Music DFW rate peaked at 38.7% in 2020–2021, which was 10.0 percentage points higher than the College rate (28.7%). It then improved to a low of 20.4% in 2023–2024, 3.5 percentage points below the College rate (23.9%). In 2024–2025, the DFW rate was 29.5%, compared to the College rate of 23.6%

Graduation Rates

The 3-year graduation rate for New First-Time, Full-Time Music AS students improved from 5.6% for the Fall 2019 cohort to 25.0% for the Fall 2022 cohort. The Fall 2022 graduation rate was also 7.1 percentage points higher than the overall College rate of 17.9%. This remarkable increase in graduation rates reflects the continued improvement in student completion outcomes within the program.
