Throughout SUNY Broome’s history, private support has significantly and positively impacted our students. Donors provide financial help for students in need. Yet, in the case of scholarship recipients, it also gives students an emotional boost. With a scholarship award, a student realizes that someone cared and invested in their potential and future careers.
In light of the milestone 10th anniversary of 24 Hours of Giving — SUNY Broome’s most important day of fundraising and College support on Dec. 3, 2024 — we are pleased to share stories of the difference a scholarship made.
Paul loves going to the gym, playing basketball, cooking, and enjoying nature. He chose SUNY Broome after he graduated from Seton Catholic Central High School.
He notes that his scholarship “holds great significance for my family and me, especially considering the financial hardships we have faced throughout our lives. This scholarship brings me closer to achieving my goals and making my mother proud. Her greatest wish for our family is to maintain good grades and strive for greatness in life.”
Jonah tried several career paths, such as graduate teaching assistant for philosophy, serving a summer as a wildland firefighter with the Forest Service, and spending time in the Conservation Corps. Finally, while working in emergency rooms alongside nurses, he decided to pursue a nursing degree at SUNY Broome.
He says, “I am so grateful to have been admitted into the program and am beyond excited for opportunities to make a positive impact once I graduate. Thank you again for supporting my nonlinear path into nursing.”
Elizabeth is a third-generation Ukrainian who loves her cultural traditions and foods and comes from a large family. She said that receiving her scholarship made her feel seen.
She told her donors that “this scholarship will allow me to commit fully to this next year at SUNY Broome without worrying about finances. Once again, thank you all so much! I am excited to begin my path at SUNY Broome!”
Rania is determined to become the first engineer in her family and to set an example for future generations.
She told her donor that her scholarship will “allow me to participate in extracurricular activities, gain valuable work experience through internships, and contribute to the community through volunteer work. Your generosity fuels my aspirations and empowers me to contribute meaningfully to society.”
