SUNY Broome Engineering Science A.S student Ty French recently served on a panel at the 2026 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Emerging Researchers Network conference in Atlanta, March 19-21. The panel featured community college students in STEM and emerging technology sector-focused programs.

Just three community college students nationwide were invited to be panelists for the session, which showcased how community colleges are opening doors to emerging STEM industries and the future of work. Panelists fielded questions about how colleges could better prepare students for these careers, what students look forward to in their professional lives, and more.

French highlighted his hope that community colleges create stronger pathways to STEM scholarships, internships, jobs and beyond: “As someone who participates in robotics competitions, the goal to win and improve teaches skills you can never learn in a classroom. These extracurricular opportunities also help students who struggle to discover which major really focuses their passion.”
