The men’s soccer team went in to Finger Lakes CC on Sophomore Day on Saturday and gave the Lakers a battle, narrowly losing 4-2.
The Lakers jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage within the first 10 minutes of the game, thanks to goals at the 3:05 and 8:38 marks.
From that point on, the Lakers did not gain anything easy from the Hornet defense, and Broome would respond with a threatening offensive attack of its own.
Broome began to control and at many points dominate the possession as the first half waned on, and the momentum the team was building finally broke through for a goal in the 39th minute. Charles Larrabee had a breakaway opportunity and drilled one past the keeper and in to the bottom right corner of the net.
Trailing 2-1, Broome remained on the attack and put more pressure on the Finger Lakes defense by continually moving the ball onto the Lakers’ half of the field. The heavily contested matchup remained 2-1 at the half.
The Hornets kept up their elevated energy as the second half opened up. When a Finger Lakes attack presented itself, the Hornets always managed to shut it down, whether it was the defensive presence of Hamza Giles, Mjhed Bher, or Austin Galley, or the brilliant efforts of Dean Patterson keeping control of the box. The Lakers did manage a goal in the 76th minute, but Broome again had an answer when Larrabee assisted a Galley goal to bring the score to 3-2 in the 81st minute.
The 3-2 tally held for just under a gritty 10-minute stretch where both teams traded blows. The Hornets controlled possession and pressured the Lakers’ defense in a few key opportunities in the final minutes, looking like they’d manage to tie the contest up. Instead, a few bad breaks late led to a Finger Lakes goal with 20 seconds remaining and the home team was able to fend off the resilient Hornets and squeak out a narrow 4-2 win.
The Hornets sit at 1-9 on the season and will next visit Erie CC on Sunday.
