Sophia Dutra helped keep Broome in the game.

The women’s basketball team started out slow after a 12 day break but finished strong on Tuesday night in Canandaigua, besting Finger Lakes CC by a score of 58-40 in the MSAC matchup. The Hornets and Lakers finished the first quarter in a 12-12 tie before another deadlock in the second quarter 15-15 to go into the half 27-27. Ava Eichler and Sophia Dutra kept Broome in the game in the first, combining for 24 out of the visitor’s 27 points.

The second half was all Broome, holding Finger Lakes to single digits in the third and fourth quarters to cruise to an 18 point win. The Hornets were able to shake the rust off in the second half after shooting just under 29% from the field in the first, they shot 35% in the third frame and 60% in the final frame.

Dutra scored a collegiate high 16 points in her first start as a Hornet, grabbed 8 boards, dished out 3 assists, and added 2 steals and 2 blocks to her lines. Eichler posted another double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds. She also had 4 assists, 5 steals and a block. Ghia Medovich added 8 points and Melissa Carden and Abby Lyon chipped in with 5 points each.

Broome will travel to Dryden this Saturday for another MSAC contest at 1:00 pm and face Tompkins Cortland CC.
