SUNY Broome women's basketball team was on the road against USCAA Division II opponent Penn State Wilkes-Barre

The women’s basketball team was on the road against USCAA Division II opponent Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

Strong second and fourth quarters by PSU Wilkes-Barre allowed the Mountain Lions to come away with a 73-53 victory.

Despite being outsized and outmanned, SUNY Broome battled the Mountain Lions well throughout as the first half saw many lead changes. The Hornets had an 18-16 lead after the first quarter behind the scoring of Sophia Pelton and Zephora Brouillette. Pelton registered eight points in the quarter while Brouillette scored five.

After having the 18-16 lead, Broome allowed 24 PSU Wilkes-Barre points in the second quarter and the Mountain Lions held a 40-27 lead at halftime. In a strong third quarter where SUNY Broome outscored PSU Wilkes-Barre 17-10, the Hornets came back to cut the deficit to just four points late in the stanza. The Mountain Lions delivered another lopsided quarter to close the game, however, outscoring SUNY Broome 23-9 in the fourth to secure the win.

Pelton led the Hornets in scoring with 14 points and also collected five steals, three rebounds, three blocks, and two assists. Brouillette was second in scoring with 11 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Sophia Ashman provided eight points and Kendall Farthing scored five points off the bench. Eight of the nine players landed in the scoring column.

SUNY Broome will look to notch its first win of the season when it travels to Corning CC on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
