The Hornets had just three total hits across two games and surrendered 31 runs to a nationally ranked Herkimer team on Thursday.
SUNY Broome hosted a perennial Region III baseball power in the #13 Herkimer Generals, and the visiting team capitalized on Broome’s mistakes en route to dominant 12-0 and 19-3 wins.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 0, Herkimer 12
The Hornets were held without a hit in the first contest of the day and committed seven errors. In a shortened game that lasted five innings, the Generals put up a three spot in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th innings. Just two Hornets reached base on a walk, Kaiden Cannistra and Jason Kithcart Jr.
Nathan Moses started on the bump for Broome and pitched more effectively than the line score would indicate. Over 4.0 innings, just four of the nine runs allowed were earned, and he logged two strikeouts. Evan Persbacker entered the game in relief in the 5th, allowing three runs and striking out one.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 3, Herkimer 19
To close out the doubleheader, Herkimer outhit SUNY Broome 13-3 and the Hornets committed eight errors. The Generals led off the game with a run, but Broome jumped in front 3-1 after the 2nd. From that point on, Herkimer scored 18 unanswered runs, including eight in the top of the 7th, to arrive at the decisive win.
Zechariah Clouston got the start for the Hornets and limited the damage to four hits and four earned runs over 3.0 innings, keeping Broome in the game. Persbacker allowed three earned runs in relief, while Cannistra gave up five earned runs on six walks in relief.
Kobe Dela Cruz and Santino Michitti combined for the three SUNY Broome hits. Dela Cruz was 1-2 with an RBI while Michitti was 2-3 with with an RBI and a run scored. Jacob McTigue had the third SUNY Broome RBI.
The Hornets have now dropped four games in a row to fall to 3-7 overall. Broome will look to get back on track with a four-game series against Fulton-Montgomery CC coming up next.
