Students performing, “Thank You, Rosa”

Pictured are students performing in last Thursday’s theater presentation SPEAK OUT: Great American Heroes. Students read the actual words of these American icons and then performed a reading of our original play “Thank You Rosa” about Rosa Parks and the famous incident on the bus that inspired the historically important Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Portrayed were Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman, Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, Spike Lee, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Kobe Bryant. “This Black History Month student-driven event ended in dancing as we think heroes should be celebrated!” said theater director Katherine Bacon. “Our photos are of two students presenting quotes from Spike Lee and Kobe Bryant, a scene from the reading of the Rosa Parks play and the dancing which followed and included audience members who joined the cast as they rocked to the Neville Brothers hit song “Sister Rosa” about Rosa Parks,” Katherine said.
