Event Details:
  Date: April 16, 2026
  Time: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  Location: The Commons 203

Dr. Turman is a dynamic scholar, storyteller, and educator whose work highlights the power of listening, cultural memory, and collective imagination in shaping more humane and connected communities. A native of Albany, NY, she is a proud double alum of Empire State University (BA & MA) and earned her Ph.D. from Union Institute & University, where her dissertation was nominated for the Distinguished Dissertation Award.

Her work brings together African American history, Afrofuturism, and cultural storytelling to explore how listening, to history and to one another, can help foster more equitable and vibrant communities. In addition to her role as faculty in the Writing and Critical Inquiry Program at the University at Albany, she is also a documentary filmmaker and creator of The Black Girl Project, which centers and amplifies the voices of Black women and girls.

Whether you’re interested in communication, community building, or simply looking for an engaging and thought-provoking experience, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn and connect.

We hope to see you there!
