In Memoriam - Nick Bongiorno, Instructor and Filmmaker

It is with heavy hearts that the Communications and Media Arts Department shares with the campus community news of the sudden passing of Adjunct Instructor and local filmmaker Nick Bongiorno of Endicott.

During more than a decade of work at SUNY Broome, Nick taught a variety of courses in both the Communications and English Departments. He was passionate and creative in his classes as he sought to inspire his students.

Nick challenged students to consider the many different aspects of media and to question both the content we as a society consume and the motivations behind the producers and distributors of media content.

He arranged unique presentations for his classes, to which he invited the larger campus community. Among the more notable events he achieved was a November 2017 classroom visit, via Skype, by Dr. Eric McLuhan and Andrew McLuhan, the son and grandson of famed media theorist Marshall McLuhan. The McLuhan’s discussed Marshall’s classic book “Understanding Media” set against the present day backdrop of new media and social media.

Nick worked ambitiously, and generously shared his work and opportunities with us. We will miss him greatly.

Arrangements for a memorial service have not yet been announced.
