Health for Haiti would like to thank everyone who participated in our “Taste of Haiti” event! We welcomed over 150 visitors to campus, including many members of our local Haitian community. Attendees enjoyed delicious Haitian cuisine catered by Tsha’s kitchen and had the opportunity to learn about multiple projects that are providing support to our friends in Haiti. The event also highlighted the significance of the Battle of Vertières and served as a multicultural celebration of Haitian and American culture. Speakers included SUNY Broome President Dr. Tony Hawkins, Professor Maureen Hankin, Dr. Jen Musa, Professor Billiam Liautaud (Cortland State and Long Island University), and SUNY Broome May ’23 graduate Widmy Leveille.
Health for Haiti would like to issue a thank you to President Hawkins for welcoming our guests, and to the many volunteers who made this event possible, including students from the SUNY Broome Dental Hygiene and Engineering Clubs, and students Kylie Butcher (Binghamton University) and Kara Zounon (SUNY Broome). Health for Haiti also thanks the SUNY Broome staff who contributed to the success of the event, including Cathy Williams, Carine Surdey, Edith Lianexay, Professor Robert Lofthouse, Professor Carole Stanley, Professor Julie Tracy, and Professor Diane Kelly. Our event would not have been possible without your help, and we are so grateful.
We would also like to thank Natacha and Brutus Charles from Tsha’s Kitchen for providing amazing food for the event and helping Health for Haiti to connect in such a meaningful way with the local Haitian community. After the event, Brutus shared, “I received a lot of calls from the community and more people are now aware of all the great things you are doing for Haiti. It is a dream come true to connect the Haitian Community with your organization”. This opportunity was also a dream come true for the SUNY Broome Health for Haiti global service-learning effort. Although conditions in Haiti are once again not safe enough for our class to run this year, we are grateful for this opportunity to expand our connections and continue our service from home.
