We offer personal counseling that is FREE and confidential for registered students. We help with the adjustment to college, stress management, mental health issues- such as depression and anxiety, and help connect students to resources in our community as needed.
Mindfulness Monday out of Counseling Corner:
Each Monday, out of the Counseling Corner – we will provide you with some tips, something to read, skills building activities, etc in regards to mindfulness.
What is mindfulness? mind·ful·ness/ˈmīn(d)f(ə)lnəs/noun
- the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.
“their mindfulness of the wider cinematic tradition” - a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.
Mindfulness practices have been proven to help individuals with managing their stress and living a more balanced life. Our intention is that by providing you these tips, tricks, materials to read and try out – that you can help yourself to live your best life. Each week is something new – some weeks do build on each other. We do hope that you follow along with us. And remember- if you need us, we are here for you.
How to Mindfully Clean your Space
A clean space isn’t just “nice to have,” it’s actually a necessity for good mental and physical health. Taking some time to clean your space- whether it be your dorm, your bedroom, your car or your entire house; having a clean environment to work in is key to promoting positive mental and physical wellness. Cleaning is important on many levels. It is an action of self-care and caring about others.
In any setting, we can practice and developing our mindful facilities of Intention and Attention. In this way mindfulness is a life skill that promotes happiness.
Activity: Cleaning your space (identify a space of your choice) with interest.
We stop when entering the space. Close your eyes for one minute and notice your thoughts and feelings. The key mindfulness attitude here is non judgment. If our thoughts are positive and feelings are pleasant, continue cleaning by paying attention to the sights, sound, sensation and smells as we go about cleaning. If our thoughts are negative and feelings are unpleasant, continue cleaning. This time we become more interested in sights, sound, sensation and smells as we go about cleaning. Being more interested in cleaning your identified space, will shift a negative intention to a positive intention.
Intention – To be more interested in the thoughts and feelings about cleaning your identified space. Acknowledge any negative thoughts about cleaning. i.e. Why do I have to do this again?
Attention – Be interested in the physical sensations of cleaning? The posture of the body, the movement of the hands etc. As best I can acknowledge all my feelings. Is there aversion or interest?
