“When a boy tells me girls can’t do gainers off the high dive, it takes me just two tries to do it. When I decide, in eighth grade, that I want to be a nuclear physicist and everyone, from parents to teachers to friends tells me that is not something girls can do, I snipe back—the first one was a woman—Marie Curie. And I got my PhD in particle physics in 1987.”

— Dr. Canough
