The cast of "The King Stag"
The cast of “The King Stag”

SUNY Broome Theater’s spring production will be The King Stag, written by Italian playwright Count Carlo Gozzi in 1762. The classic commedia dell’arte play has been translated, adapted and performed for almost three centuries.

Director and Associate Professor Katherine Bacon will be featured in a small role in the production. “It is great fun to rehearse and a wonderful opportunity for me and the students to learn a great deal about the world of commedia, which has been a part of the theater landscape for a very long time,” she said.

Puppets and masks designed and created especially for our production will be featured, enhancing the age-old tale of star crossed lovers, magicians and mistaken identities. The show includes many of the stock commedia characters such as Tartaglia, Pantalone, Leander, Brighella, Clarissa, Truffaldino, etc.

Turandot, the famous Puccini opera, and The Love For Three Oranges, the Prokofiev opera, are two great works that were inspired by plays written by Carlo Gozzi.

The performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30; Wednesday, May 1; and Friday, May 3, in the Angelo Zuccolo Little Theatre. We are experimenting with weeknight performances this semester.

Faculty and staff always receives comp tickets. As usual, the show will be presented without an intermission and will be over by 9 p.m. See you there!
