SUNY Broome's Speakers of the House Toastmasters Club hosted its Fall Student Speaking Contest on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019.

SUNY Broome’s Speakers of the House Toastmasters Club hosted its Fall Student Speaking Contest on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Students sharpened their speaking skills and showed their creativity, organization, passion, humor and their ability to think on their feet.

Contestants competed in two categories: Prepared Speeches of 4 to 6 minutes, and Table Topics (impromptu speeches of 1 to 2 minutes). A total of $800 was awarded in prizes, with generous support from Student Activities.

Liberal Arts Dean Michael Kinney welcomed everyone, and judges came from off campus while students emceed the event. The student improv club performed during intermission. About 50 people attended and enjoyed the speeches and pizza, and a good time was had by all.

Prepared speech topics included putting down our cell phones, savoring the people in our lives, and body dysmorphia.  Impromptu speakers chose from the following questions:  How would you describe yourself in an online dating ad?  If we learn from our mistakes, why are we afraid to make mistakes?  How would you improve SUNY Broome?

Congratulations to all winners!
