Alert logo depicting an orange exclamation mark within a triangleAs you may have heard, Broome County is currently under a State of Emergency due to flash flooding and river flooding in some areas.

There is no travel ban currently and the college remains open. The current State of Emergency bans the recreational use of waterways in the county, and advises travelers not to drive on flooded roadways. A list of current road closures is available at http://www.gobroomecounty.com/

We will continue to monitor the weather forecast and road conditions, and take further action if and when necessary.

If you are traveling and encounter flash flooding, consider the following advice from the National Weather Service:

  • Don’t underestimate the power of water; it only takes 6 inches of water to knock over and carry away an adult, 12 inches to carry away a small car, and 18 to 24 inches to carry away most large SUVs, vans and trucks.
  • Never drive around barricades. Most flood fatalities occur in vehicles.
  • If you encounter a flash flood, get to higher ground, don’t drive into the water and stay informed by monitoring local radar, television, weather radio or the Internet. Turn around – don’t drown!
