Last Friday, despite four hours of rain, more than 40 people participated in the annual Sleep Out for the Homeless to raise money for the Coalition for the Homeless of the Southern Tier. Sixteen tents and one box provided shelter and more than 25 people stayed the entire evening, including four senior citizens and my two grandsons.

Dancing and song were provided by very talented students from the Student Village. The Student Assembly provided important help to make it a success.

It’s an important issue. Two years ago, there were 947 homeless people in Broome County; today, there are 1,326.

There is still time to make a contribution to the Sleep Out. Send your contribution to myself (Doug Garnar) or the FSA by May 12.
