A theater curtainThe Summer Savoyards, who have presented Gilbert and Sullivan operettas every summer since 1961, have scheduled auditions for their August production of one of G&S’s most popular and tuneful shows, The Pirates of Penzance.

Tryouts will be 1 to 3 p.m. May 20 and 7 to 9 p.m. May 21 at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church, 44 Main St., Binghamton. The audition room is located in Trinity House, behind the church; the entrance is on Oak Street.

Prospective leads should bring one song in English — preferably from the G&S canon — that best demonstrates their vocal ability. A pianist will be provided. Excerpts from the script will be provided for a cold reading. Persons interested in being in the chorus are encouraged to audition but are not required.

To schedule an audition time, “like” Summer Savoyards, Inc. (Binghamton) on Facebook to locate a Google Form that can be used to request an audition time. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Performances will be Aug. 10-12 in the Anderson Center Chamber Hall at Binghamton University. Rehearsals will be Monday-Thursday evenings beginning in mid-June. Some weekend dates will be required in late July/early August. Funding for the show is provided in part by a project grant from the Broome County Arts Council’s United Cultural Fund.

Not an on-stage sort of person? Volunteer opportunities are available in a variety of other areas of production.

E-mail summersavoyards@gmail.com for more information about auditions, to sign up for the chorus, to inquire about orchestra positions or to volunteer to work on the production. Information about the show and the Savoyards also can be found on Facebook.
