Currently, the campus food pantry is going through its donations, weeding out the expired food and categorizing its food items, explained freshman Logan Blakeslee, a recently elected Student Assembly senator.

It’s a bit of a transition period for the Assembly and the pantry, but it will be fully operational soon. “Please be patient during the next two weeks,” Blakeslee said.

During the course of the year, clubs and departments throughout campus typically raise funds and collect donations for the pantry. Food for Thought typically receives a lot of end-of-semester donations from the Student Village; students who are moving out often will donate their food, Blakeslee said.

Students seeking help from the pantry must fill out an application through Student Assembly. Those in need may receive up to two food bags every month, full of food and/or hygiene products.

Applications are available through Student Activities and the Student Assembly, both of which are located in the old Science Building. Volunteers are also welcome. Contact StudentAssembly@acad.sunybroome.edu for more information.

Join us on Nov. 15

Food insecurity is real – both worldwide and on our campus.

This year’s Hunger Banquet will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 15 in Decker 201. Join us not only for the free lunch, but the opportunity to engage in deep experiential learning about poverty and food insecurity.

While admission is free, there are a limited number of tickets. Please contact Melissa Martin in Counseling Services at martinmm2@sunybroome.edu to order tickets.  Those who attend the banquet are encouraged to contribute a non-perishable, canned or packaged food item for the campus food pantry.

Share your story

As a walk-up to the Hunger Banquet, we are interested in sharing stories from students, faculty and staff who have experienced food insecurity in their lives. Have a story to share? Please contact the college’s writer, Jennifer Micale, at micalejr@sunybroome.edu or (607) 778-5682.
