The purpose of the fourth estate has always been to provide a check on the power of government since the Bill of Rights was first penned. And yet, we are witnessing the emergence of a culture in which facts are increasingly perceived as optional and bad information clogs the internet, news agencies are being forced to close, and journalists around the world are being abducted and even murdered.

Join us from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Oct. 25 for a discussion with media critic Jeff Cohen, founding director of the Park Center for Independent Media and founder of Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR), via Skype on “The Assault on Journalism: Suppression, Fake News and State Power.” The event takes place in Wales 203B and will be moderated by Communications instructor Nick Bongiorno.
